How Roman Sledziejowski is Empowering Entrepreneurs in Underrepresented Communities

Starting a business is notoriously challenging, and for entrepreneurs in economically disadvantaged communities, the struggle is even more intense. With limited resources and a clientele deeply affected by rising inflation and soaring housing costs, the obstacles for small business owners are significant. It was with this in mind that entrepreneur and finance expert Roman Sledziejowski founded the Success Angels Foundation.

A Polish immigrant in New York City, Sledziejowski had to work exceptionally hard to earn his place among more privileged peers. His determination led to success, and after becoming Valedictorian of his high school class, he attended Columbia University to study Economics. However, it was a part-time job he took during high school that would shape his future and open unexpected doors for the highly competitive athlete.

At 17, Sledziejowski started working at investment bank Salomon Smith Barney, and by 18, he became the youngest National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) licensed stockbroker in the United States. He quickly advanced to a full-time Investment Associate role at Smith Barney, a member of Citigroup.

Over the years, Sledziejowski has held senior positions, including Vice President and First Vice President of Investments at Prudential Securities, Senior Vice President and Investment Officer at Wachovia Securities, and later transitioned into entrepreneurship. He founded Innovest Holdings, a New York City-based financial holding company, co-founded MyPlace Development, a real estate firm in Poznan, Poland, and recently co-founded Savant Strategies, a global management consulting firm.

Through his diverse experiences in stocks, real estate, offshore investments, and management consulting, Sledziejowski has gained valuable knowledge in the essential functions that drive business success. He also recognized that not everyone had access to the same opportunities he did. Driven by a desire to share his expertise with aspiring entrepreneurs in underserved communities, he established the Success Angels Foundation (SAF).

The Vision of Success Angels Foundation

SAF is a non-profit organization designed to support and mentor aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those from communities facing significant socio-economic challenges.

Founder Roman Sledziejowski defines these communities as “those historically underrepresented in policymaking, those burdened by disproportionate health and environmental issues, and those adversely affected by rising housing costs, limited resources, and relocation challenges that hinder growth.”

SAF’s mission is clear: to provide financial and educational resources to emerging start-ups, enabling them to develop their ideas, build successful businesses, and drive economic growth in their local communities. SAF offers a variety of programs and services designed to support entrepreneurs at any stage of their business journey.

Key Programs and Services at SAF

Mentorship: SAF pairs inexperienced entrepreneurs with seasoned professionals, creating a mentorship program that offers guidance, advice, and support. Research shows that working with a mentor increases the likelihood of success and accelerates growth while helping entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls.

Funding Opportunities: Qualified entrepreneurs can apply for grants and low-interest loans, gaining access to the critical early-stage funding that can be a game-changer. As businesses expand, SAF also helps entrepreneurs connect with venture capitalists and angel investors to secure larger funding rounds.

Education & Training: Understanding the complexities of business planning, marketing, financial management, and legal issues is essential for entrepreneurial success. SAF offers workshops, seminars, and other training programs to equip business owners with the skills they need to succeed and grow.

Networking: SAF hosts networking events and pitch competitions, providing entrepreneurs with opportunities to meet industry experts, potential investors, and other professionals. These interactions foster collaboration, exposure, and growth.

By supporting entrepreneurs, SAF not only provides hope and opportunity but also stimulates the local economies where these businesses are based, creating jobs and leaving a lasting legacy of inspiration and success.

The Broader Impact of Building Strong Communities

Sledziejowski understands that when businesses thrive in economically disadvantaged communities, the positive impact on residents is profound. Living in such communities often means facing lower life expectancy, higher poverty rates, linguistic isolation, limited opportunities, and a higher prevalence of health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

“We aim to reverse troubling trends in economically disadvantaged communities in the U.S., with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship that benefits historically marginalized communities of color and low-income areas,” says Sledziejowski. “The Success Angels Foundation has tremendous potential, backed by a talented team of volunteers committed to the cause.”

Sharing Access to Resources and Knowledge

Currently serving as Vice-Chairman of Savant Strategies, a management consulting firm that works with middle-market companies across Latin America, Europe, and South Africa, Sledziejowski leverages his extensive business experience and network to give back to those in need. With over two decades of experience founding and leading successful businesses, he is now using the Success Angels Foundation to bring about meaningful change in the world.

Through SAF, Sledziejowski hopes to empower entrepreneurs and lift up economically disadvantaged communities, providing them with the resources and guidance to thrive for years to come.
